Welcome to our Institute . . . What is psychoanalysis? Psychoanalysis
is a general psychology, which owes its establishment to Sigmund Freud. It
provides techniques for treating psychological problems which rely on a
long-term, intimate relationship between analyst and patient in order to
achieve both a more profound understanding of the conscious and unconscious
reasons for an individual’s psychological problems and a more lasting
emotional growth. Since Freud’s time, psychoanalytic knowledge has continued
to broaden and deepen. Over the past century psychoanalysis has accumulated a
body of knowledge about human psychology that includes an understanding both
of the unconscious mind and of normal and pathological development from infancy
to old age. This knowledge has not only been useful in clinical mental
healthcare, but also has applications in a wide variety of related
disciplines from anthropology to neuroscience and in a wide range of social
activity from education and parenting to hostage negotiation. About our Institute . . . The
Institute of the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia is an approved
training institute of the American Psychoanalytic Association. The
Institute's objectives are to advance psychoanalytic education and research
and to offer a contemporary education in psychoanalytic theory and practice
in accord with the training standards of the American Psychoanalytic
Association. The curriculum integrates a Modern Classical perspective on
psychoanalytic theory with the more recent contributions of Self Psychology,
Trauma Theory and Relational Theory. The structure of the education is
predicated on the concept of clinical immersion: candidates are urged to
coordinate the timing of their personal analysis, didactic instruction, and
supervised clinical experiences, in order to facilitate the synergistic
integration of the complex body of knowledge and experience which represents
contemporary psychoanalysis. To learn more, explore this menu: Institute
